About this data

  • Households with children are households with one or more people under 18 years, from ACS table B11005. The person under 18 need not be the householder's own child.
  • The share is households with one or more people under 18 divided by all households in that area. A state share is for that area alone, so these percentages cannot be averaged into a United States household rate.
  • A midpoint of the 52 published shares is the middle of those area rates, not a national figure built from every US household.
  • The Census published 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. None of the household counts were suppressed, and the main margins of error are ordinary sampling errors rather than ACS controlled-estimate sentinels.
  • Puerto Rico is in the ranking and table. Alaska and Hawaii appear on the ranking; on the map they are shown in inset.
  • Family and married-couple columns are the ACS household-type split of households that include someone under 18.
