About this data

  • Median gross rent is the midpoint of contract rent plus estimated monthly utilities and fuels for renter-occupied units, in 2023 dollars (ACS table B25064). It is not an average asking rent.
  • A state median is the midpoint for renters in that state, so these figures cannot be averaged to produce a national figure.
  • The Census published 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. None of the medians were suppressed, and every rent margin of error was published.
  • The map covers the 48 contiguous states with Alaska and Hawaii as insets. Puerto Rico stays in the ranking and table.
