About this data

  • Median year structure built is the midpoint year for housing units in that area. Half of units were built in or before that year, and half after.
  • An earlier median year means older housing stock. A later year means newer stock.
  • A midpoint of state medians is not a United States median year built. These figures cannot be averaged to produce a national figure.
  • The Census published 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. None of the medians were suppressed, and no margin of error used an ACS annotation sentinel.
  • Alaska and Hawaii appear in the ranking and table. On the map they are shown in the usual inset positions.
