Summary

Darker amber is a higher share of adults 25 and over with a bachelor's degree or higher. Each city is a marked point on the US state map. Alaska and Hawaii are inset. Puerto Rico cities are in the ranking and table but are not drawn here.

Among the 346 US cities with at least 100,000 residents, a typical city has 34.7 percent of adults 25 and over with a bachelor's degree or higher, the midpoint, so half of these cities sit above that share and half sit below. Cambridge, Massachusetts is highest at 80.2 percent, then Ann Arbor, Michigan and Arlington, Virginia. East Los Angeles, California is lowest at 10.6 percent. 56 of the 346 cities have a bachelor's-or-higher majority. These are each city's own ACS shares of people 25 years and over, not a national average of people.

About this data

  • Educational attainment is the highest credential completed among people 25 years and over (ACS table B15003). A person with a master's degree is counted only there, not again as a bachelor's holder. Bachelor's or higher sums bachelor's, master's, professional and doctorate. High school or higher sums a regular diploma or GED through a doctorate.
  • A city is included when the ACS published at least 100,000 residents in the 2023 five-year estimates (table B01003). Smaller places are left out. The 100,000 cutoff uses total population, not the 25-and-over count.
  • A city share is that place's own ACS estimate. The midpoint of the 346 included cities is not a national figure, because cities differ in population.
  • The map covers the 48 contiguous states. Cities in Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico stay in the ranking and table.
  • For 20 cities the ACS does not publish a population margin of error (code *****): the estimate is controlled to official counts, so a sampling error is not applicable. Those cells are shown as a dash, not as −555,555,555.
