Summary

Darker amber is a higher share of workers who commute by public transportation. Puerto Rico is listed in the ranking and table but is not on this map.

A typical published area has 1.0 percent of workers commuting by public transportation, the midpoint of the 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico on the 2023 ACS five-year estimates. New York leads at 22.4 percent, and the District of Columbia is close behind at 22.3 percent. New Jersey (8.5 percent), Massachusetts (7.0 percent) and Illinois (6.4 percent) are the only other areas at or above 5 percent. Mississippi is the lowest at 0.3 percent. New York is 22.1 percentage points above Mississippi. These are each area's own share of workers who used public transportation excluding taxicab, not a national average of states and not a United States transit rate.

About this data

  • Public transportation is the ACS parent line for bus, subway or elevated rail, long-distance train or commuter rail, light rail, streetcar or trolley (carro público in Puerto Rico), and ferryboat. It excludes taxicab.
  • The share is workers who commute by public transportation divided by all workers (the B08301 universe). Rates are recomputed from the component counts.
  • A state transit share is that state's own worker share, so these figures cannot be averaged to produce a national figure. The midpoint of the 52 published areas is not a United States transit rate.
  • The Census published 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. None of the worker counts were suppressed, and no margins of error were controlled ACS sentinels.
  • Alaska and Hawaii appear in the ranking and table. On the map they are drawn as insets. Puerto Rico is in the ranking and table but is not on the state map.
