Summary

Darker amber is a higher share of households with a broadband Internet subscription such as cable, fiber or DSL. Each city is a marked point on the US state map. Alaska and Hawaii are inset. Puerto Rico cities are in the ranking and table but are not drawn here.

Among the 346 US cities with at least 100,000 residents, a typical city has a broadband Internet subscription such as cable, fiber or DSL in 77.9% of households, the midpoint, so half of these cities sit above that share and half sit below. Highlands Ranch, Colorado leads at 92.4%, then Frisco, Texas at 91.2% and Cary, North Carolina at 90.4%. Brownsville, Texas is lowest at 46.7%. 5 cities reach 90%. These are each city's own ACS household shares, not a United States Internet rate.

About this data

  • A city is included when the ACS published at least 100,000 residents in the 2023 five-year estimates. Smaller places are left out.
  • Each share is of occupied households in that city on ACS table B28002, not a count of people. Broadband here is the cable, fiber optic or DSL line (B28002_007), recomputed as a share of total households (B28002_001).
  • Cellular data plan only is households with a cellular data plan and no other type of Internet subscription (B28002_006). No Internet access is B28002_013. Ranking on this page uses the cable/fiber/DSL broadband share, not broadband of any type.
  • A midpoint of city shares is not a United States Internet rate. Cities have different numbers of households, so these percentages cannot be averaged to produce a national figure.
  • The map covers the 48 contiguous states. Cities in Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico stay in the ranking and table.
  • For 20 city estimates the ACS does not publish a sampling margin of error (code *****): the figure is controlled, so a sampling error is not applicable. Those cells are shown as a dash, not as −555,555,555.
